Keynote and Featured Speakers

Keynote Speaker: Dr. Christopher C. Jett

Dr. Christopher C. Jett is an Associate Professor of Mathematics Education at Georgia State University where he employs a culturally responsive praxis while teaching pre-service and in-service middle and high school mathematics teachers. He is also an award-winning mathematics educator. His research examines Black male students’ mathematical and racialized experiences. In addition, he is the author of Black Male Success in Higher Education: How the Mathematical Brotherhood Empowers a Collegiate Community to Thrive (Teachers College Press, 2022).

Featured Speaker: Jennifer Bay-Williams

Dr. Jennifer Bay-Williams is author of Math Fact Fluency and the Figuring out Fluency book series (an anchor book with 6 classroom companion books), the iconic Elementary and Middle School Mathematics: Teaching Developmentally and many other books and articles. Jennifer is a leader in mathematics education, advocating for educators to re-define fluency and implement practices that are more effective in terms of learning and developing positive mathematics identities for our students. She has served on the board of directors for National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) and TODOS: Mathematics for ALL, and as president of the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (AMTE). She is a popular speaker, working with organizations and districts across the U.S. and around the world. She works at the University of Louisville, where she is a professor and Associate Dean of Academic Affairs.

Featured Speaker: Nakasha Kirkland

Nakasha is an Instructional Facilitator and Educational Consultant. She partners with middle school math teachers to clear the fog and make math make sense — one ‘aha’ moment at a time. Her approach turns overwhelm into confidence, all while keeping things practical, engaging, and (yes) enjoyable!

Featured Speaker: Padmanabhan Seshaiyer

Dr. Padmanabhan Seshaiyer (Padhu) is a Professor and Director at George Mason University (GMU) where he has served in multiple leadership positions including the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Director of the STEM Accelerator Program and Director of the Center for Outreach in Mathematics Professional Learning and Educational Technology. During the last decade, he initiated and directed a variety of research, educational and outreach programs including faculty development, post-graduate, graduate and undergraduate research, K-12 outreach, teacher professional development, and enrichment programs, to foster the interest of students and teachers in Mathematics education at all levels.

Conference Strands

Illuminating Decisions with Data

Sessions in this strand will provide educators with the knowledge, skills, and resources necessary to effectively integrate data-driven decision-making into their teaching. By focusing on the data cycle and real-world, problem-based learning, educators will explore how to use data to illuminate critical decisions in the classroom. These sessions will empower teachers to harness technology tools to explore and analyze data, supporting the teaching and learning of mathematics and promoting data literacy. Participants will also learn how to adapt their instruction with technology and data tools to enhance student outcomes and prepare learners for a data-driven future.

Shining a Light on AI and Education

Sessions in this strand will focus on the transformative power of AI in education, guiding educators on how to effectively develop and integrate AI within the classroom. Participants will explore dynamic technologies that enhance teaching and learning, with a special focus on tools designed to support multilingual students. These sessions will provide practical strategies for harnessing AI to create engaging, inclusive, and adaptive learning environments that meet the diverse needs of today’s students. Educators will leave with resources and insights to make AI a powerful ally in their instructional toolkit.

Spotlighting Access and Equity

Sessions in this strand will focus on approaches for teaching a wide range of student demographics, with an emphasis on culturally responsive teaching practices. Educators will explore strategies to improve outcomes for historically and systemically excluded students, including those from diverse racial backgrounds, multilingual learners, students with disabilities, neurodivergent students, LGBTQ+ students, and those facing economic disadvantages. In collaboration with the Benjamin Banneker Association, participants will also navigate the challenges of teaching in today’s political climate, including addressing anti-CRT policies, while maintaining a commitment to equity and inclusion in the classroom.

Leading with Light: Building Strong Math Communities

Sessions in this strand will highlight the power of community engagement in supporting mathematics education. Participants will explore how to create a positive math school culture by fostering strong partnerships between teachers, parents, school leadership, and the community-at-large. Sessions will also focus on equipping administrators with evidence-based strategies to stay informed and actively support quality mathematics education. Additionally, educators will learn how to become influencers in their schools, building leadership capacity and improving teacher outcomes, all while advocating for equitable access to high-quality math education for all students.

Radiating Creativity in Mathematics

This strand explores innovative strategies to inspire creativity in math instruction. Sessions will highlight the CRA (Concrete-Representational-Abstract) approach for scaffolding concepts, integrating play and exploration, and using arts and movement to make math dynamic. Educators will also learn how to gamify math for deeper engagement and foster student-led inquiry and problem-solving. These sessions will equip teachers with creative tools to make math accessible, engaging, and fun.
