VCTM July 2014

July 02, 2014 9:40 PM | Diane Leighty (Administrator)

Message from the President

As July begins, my term as your new president also begins.  I look forward to working with our energetic Board and all our members as we strive to support educators throughout Virginia.  The next year will be a busy one for VCTM as we co-host the NCTM Regional Conference in Richmond and host an Academy in Virginia Beach.  Please consider becoming more involved by volunteering to help at the conference or volunteering for a VCTM committee.

Website Updates

Take a moment to check out our website.  It has been updated, it looks great, and we believe it is easier to use.  And, don’t forget there is a members’ only section.  If you have not yet registered for the members’ only portion of the site, please do so.

Regional NCTM Conference in Richmond:  Registration is now open!

VCTM and The Greater Richmond Council of Teachers of Mathematics are co-host organizations for the NCTM Regional Conference in Richmond on November 12-14.  This is a wonderful opportunity in our own backyard.  Join us to hear presentations by Dan Meyer, Diane Briars, Skip Fennell, Linda Gojak, Steve Leinwand, Cathy Seeley, and Stuart Murphy as well as Virginia’s own Michael Bolling, LouAnn Lovin, and Joy Whitenack

Let’s make this NCTM’s most successful conference yet!!

Save the Date for the VCTM Academy and Learn to Make Math Meaningful

Next year, we will sponsor an Academy rather than the Spring Conference.  The Academy will be held March 6 – 7, 2015 and the location is Virginia Beach.  The format of an academy differs from a conference in that it is focused around a theme and participants are part of a grade-band group for the entire day and a half. The  grade bands are K-2, 3-5, 6-8, Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2 and above.  This year the theme is Making Math Meaningful: Inquiry Learning through the Process Goals. An Academy is also smaller than a conference and space is limited. So, watch for more information and be ready to join us in Virginia Beach.

For questions about any of the items, to volunteer for a VCTM committee, or to express interest in serving on the executive board, please contact us at vctmath@gmail.com.

Thanks for all you do for mathematics education!
