Teacher As Ally in a Culturally Responsive Elementary Math Classroom

The book Culturally Responsive Teaching and the Brain describes a Learning Alliance Partnership as a component of Culturally Responsive Teaching. The participants will explore how to become an ally in this partnership in the math classroom using seven specific and practical techniques along with social emotional learning. Participants will leave with samples of Culturally Responsive Teaching tools that can be used to foster an equitable math classroom.

Formidable Formative Assessment: Simple Strategies for Writing Engaging Open-Ended Tasks

This session will introduce three templates for creating rich formative assessment tasks that elicit conceptual understanding, expose potential misconceptions, and promote meaningful classroom discussion based on a variety of student responses. Participants will have the opportunity to try out these templates and receive feedback.

Desmos Applets: Exploring the New "Actions" Feature in the Desmos Graphing Calculator

Trying to figure out how to leverage the Desmos graphing calculator as an instructional tool as opposed to an answer getter?

In this session, we will explore Desmos' newly-released clickable object functionality. Learn how to create interactive applets so that students can explore how different variables affect a function. We will build an applet to explore lines (slope-intercept and point-slope) and quadratics (standard form and vertex form).

Classroom-Ready Socio-Emotional Learning strategies for K-5

Nurture students' love for math through SEL. Join the discussion and explore all the faces of SEL. Through research and collaboration, uncover the 5 Socio-Emotional Learning competencies. We will research some of the latest trends. Model and discuss in small and large groups how to recognize and encourage SEL in your classroom. What are the effective techniques and tools to keep K-5 students excited about math? How can we combine music, math, ELA with SEL? Attend this session to find out.

Cultural Competency: Providing Equitable Math Instruction with Cultural Relevance

Scores from the National Assessment of Educational Progress suggest that if current educational practices in math classrooms remain the same, the achievement gap between Caucasians and African descent demographics will be eliminated in approximately 217 years. To close the academic achievement gap for all students, teachers must be equipped with methods to conduct equitable instruction that is culturally relevant. In this session, attendees will learn methods for providing cultural relevance within specific academic settings. Participants will be empowered with strategies that will engage students in a relevant manner as well as acquire pedagogy, perspective, and practices to implement in the math classroom.

Dismantling Systems of Oppression: Disruptive Teaching for Equitable Mathematics Classrooms

In this session, educators will uncover the impact of biases on the teaching and learning of mathematics. Together, we will engage in a conversation to reframe deficit narratives of historically oppressed populations. Participants will also engage in rehearsals on asset-based discourse around work samples in attending to students’ mathematical thinking.

Level Up Your SOL-Based Instruction using Legends of Learning!

Accelerate learning, engage every student, and meet individual needs with games! Let's think about approaching math instruction differently. Teachers use math games frequently but often struggle to integrate meaningful activities that deepen student understanding. Attendees will learn how to use games to personalize instruction, teach number sense, and then use aggregated performance data to determine next steps with each student.

Equity through Math Discourse

Districts all over the nation are wrestling with the clear and present danger of inequities in our educational system. The access gap is very real. Many talented teachers and educational leaders have realized that the goal of equity requires honest insight into the current content knowledge of students, increased bias awareness, and a sincere shift in

instructional design. In this workshop, participants will explore the power of student discourse as an equity tool within the mathematics classroom. We will review the combinations of data that lead to targeted teacher actions. Attendees will experience a well-structured discourse-based routine for their math classes which will elevate the level of student discourse while increasing access to grade level content. This will be practical, transformative, inspirational, and fun!

Closing the Critical Thinking Gap

Creating a world where critical thinking is no longer a luxury good requires educators to recognize the inherent critical thinking potential of all students. In this session, we will explore ways math teachers can provide purposeful critical thinking opportunities in their daily instruction. As educators, it is our duty to help students develop critical thinking skills so they can apply them consistently throughout life, academics, and careers.

VA STEM: Inspiration through Integration

Virginia STEM continues to evolve. There are many great programs in the Commonwealth, but less in terms of collaborative efforts in STEM Education. The VA STEM Education Advisory Board is helping align STEM programming to create a more unified vision and collective impact in Virginia’s STEM Education. There are various models of how schools implement STEM. What can we do as educators and leaders to ensure the most equitable access to this deeper learning opportunity for all youth?

Create an Environment to Support Independent Learners

In this highly engaging and hands-on workshop, participants will put their problem-solving skills to the test as they collaborate to solve a rich, unfamiliar mathematical task. Teachers will have the opportunity to reflect on their own identity as a learner and connect to culturally responsive strategies that were modeled. Participants will come away with strategies to redesign their classroom to support students as they become more independent learners and grow their intellective capacity.

Bridging for Math Strength Webinars

VDOE, George Mason University, and a cadre of teachers and specialists have created formative assessment tools and instructional modules that will bridge new concepts to those from the prior grade. Each module helps identify students' strength and will provide strategies to advance mathematical learning through engaging bridging activities (i.e., routines, tasks and games).

SMILE: An Elementary Math + Social Justice Project

SMILE (Seeing Myself In the Library Everywhere) is a math + social justice project that was completed in the spring of 2021 by a group of fourth and fifth graders. You will learn how students collected and analyzed data to determine how well their library collection matched the school's student body. Results and next steps will be shared. Ideas will be provided for other elementary level math + social justice projects.

Pillars & Practices: Ungrading to Catalyze Change at the Margins

As educators, we seek innovative ways to engage students, close gaps between student groups, and motivate all students to demonstrate their brilliance. But many students are too focused on points, while others feel they are unable to succeed. Come learn how a major overhaul of my grading practices led students to reimagine their own math identities and gain confidence to contribute in rich class discussions. Takeaway strategies to provide meaningful learning experiences for all students.

Enhancing Pedagogical Practices in Mathematics Education through Culturally Responsive Teaching Practices

This session will help to disseminate best practices in integrated mathematics education to improve student learning. Using collaborative real-world problem-based learning, the session will help participants to acquire enhanced instructional skills to engage students from underrepresented and underserved populations in exploring driving questions that require mathematical thinking needed to formulate problems, collect and analyze data and present and justify their reasoning and critique others ideas to evaluate their conclusions. The session will also help to empower the participants to recognize their own biases, enlightening them about local communities, and recognizing how talents appear in various cultures. Finally, the participants will also learn about the latest scientific findings on the learning characteristics of underrepresented and underserved populations, awareness of cultural differences, understanding of students with multiple learning styles, and the use of equitable and non-biased assessments in mathematics education.

STEM Challenges in Early Childhood Education
